My Hair Care Routine: Tips & Secrets

Writer's picture: Zoë QuinnZoë Quinn

I struggled to find the perfect hair care routine for myself for the longest time. A secret that many people do not know is that my hair has been an insecurity of mine since elementary school. I have taught myself by watching many youtube videos and with the help of my aunt who is also my hairdresser (the best in the Hudson Valley that is- @xoleah) how to take care of and style my hair.

MY HAIR HISTORY

I have a whole lotta hair on my head, and it is pretty thick and it is very long. Since I was about 12, I bleached my hair. My hair has been platinum blonde, to brown, back to platinum, then pink, purple and blue. For the last two years, I had decided to give my hair a break and just let my natural color take over, and let me tell you I LOVE my natural hair color! My hair does grow pretty fast. My hair went from being chin-length and is now down my back. I find myself making a hair appointment every few months just for a trim to cut off any dead ends.

I wash my hair pretty frequently (I know, I know that's not good) but it's just what I do. Recently I have noticed I have been trying to wash it less frequently so we will see how that goes! But I've outlined my most recent haircare routine in this post to share what has been working for me.

PRE-SHOWER

I like to start off with a hair treatment. I have been using 'Wild Growth- Hair Oil' for a while now and let me tell you it is the best if you want to see hair growth fast. This product encourages hair growth (on bald spots, thinning areas, or those baby hairs in the front that just won't seem to grow); it also gives an overall thickening effect. I apply the oil throughout my entire hair and scalp (and I do this about 3x a week). This oil smells a little odd but I am telling you, you will see results within the first 2 weeks using this product. With this oil treatment, I also add in Monat's 'Rejuveniqe' oil. This oil is a must-have!! I use it in my hair and on my skin and it just smooths and hydrates everything (plus it smells like lemons). I will let the treatment sit in my hair for about 45 minutes then I hop in the shower to rinse it out.

IN THE SHOWER

The shampoo & conditioner that I use is the 'OGX shampoo and conditioner'. The prices are drugstore and their quality is pretty good. I really like the sent called “Coconut Milk” and it gives a deep clean while adding softness and hydration! Plus it smells like heaven on earth! Recently I added Monat's 'Smoothing Deep Conditioner' - I like how this product smells and it really helps to smooth and control frizz in your hair (which will definitely be great when the weather starts to get warmer).

PRE-BLOWDRY

9 times out of 10, I blow dry my hair instead of allowing it to just air dry. I always comb out my hair with a detangler. The detangler I have been using is Monat's 'Unknot Detangler'. This is another product that smells really yummy and it leaves my hair feeling so soft. The next three products I use are also from Monat (I highly suggest purchasing their products, they really do work so well and they have great deals). Now, this product is the product that you all need..I am obsessed with Monat's 'Rejuvabeads'. If you have split ends, this product is for you. I use 3 pumps and just run it through the ends of my hair. After that, I use the 'Monat Studio One Blow Out Cream' and 'Reshape Root Lifter'. The blowout cream just gives my hair that smooth and shiny blowout finish. And the root lifter gives my hair more volume and fullness.

If I am airdrying my hair, I use the 'OGX Green Tea Fitness Air Dry Cream'. This product makes my hair smell so good. And my hair has such a nice wave to it as well after using it.

POST-DRY

My hair gets oily so easily, so dry shampoo has become a very good friend of mine. Ouai 'Dry Shampoo Foam' is one of my favorites but it is a bit pricey. If I am on a budget, I will use Not Your Mother's 'Clean Freak Refreshing Dry Shampoo'. It gets the job done just as well.

STYLING

Air Dried Hair

Like I said, I blow dry my hair most of the time so I have to use a heat protectant spray in my hair. The Aussie 'Total Miracle Heat Protecting Spray' is drug store priced and it works fairly well for me. It has a very nice fruity smell to it and I do see less heat damage occurring when I use it. Now, this styling tool is a must-have. The Revlon Salon One-Step Hair Dryer and Volumizer is a game-changer and will seriously make your life 10x easier. This tool allows you to not only blow dry your hair so much faster but allows you to give yourself the most beautiful blowout.

Blow Out using the Revlon One- Step Hair Dryer

When I style my hair, I either like to have a nice straight blow out or I like to have more of a beach wave look. I use a 1-inch curling iron and I typically wrap my hair around the barrel, keeping the clamp open like a wand. I always brush my curls out when I am done to give it a loose natural look. Stylecraft has really great styling tools, including a 1-inch curling iron which my aunt uses to style my hair with. You can click the curling iron picture below to purchase the iron PLUS get 20% using the code 'XOLEAH20' at check out.

I love these hair products and they really make my hair feel and look so good! If you have any questions or product recommendations please comment below.

*Monat products do appear to be a bit pricey, but when you sign up as a VIP (one time $20) you can buy a bundle of stuff and get the products for a much cheaper price. You can use this link to sign up and receive product discounts and free products.
